The How of Labor Day
Labor Day differs in every essential way from the other holidays of the year in any country," said Samuel Gompers, founder and longtime president of the American Federation of Labor. "All other holidays are in a more or less degree connected with conflicts and battles of man's prowess over man, of strife and discord for greed and power, of glories achieved by one nation over another. Labor Day...is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race, or nation."
The First Monday in September is dedicated to the working Citizens of America. It celebrates the contribution American workers to the strength, well-being and prosperity of our great nation.
The Who of Labor Day
To this day the person behind Labor Day is still un-cetin. Some people believe it to be Peter J. McGuire the secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners as well as a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor.
Peter McGuire's Place in Labor Day History has not gone Unchallenged. Many people are to believe that it was a one Matthew Maguire a Machinists and not Peter McGuire. Matthew Maguire a secretary of the local 344 of the International Association of mechanics in Paterson N. J. It is said that Matthew Maguire proposed Labor Day while working in the Central Labor Union in New York City in 1882.
To this day there is still some discrepancy on who actually came up with the idea but all that is certain is that the Central Labor Union appointed a Committee to plan and demonstrate a picnic for Labor Day. (Birth of Labor Day).
The What and Why of Labor Day
What is Labor Day? Labor Day is more than just a big party on the first Monday in September with good food and close friends. Labor Day is celebrated to pay respect to all the working people of America and to honor and praise them for a job well done.
The Where and When of Labor Day
Labor Day was first celebrated in New York City in 1882 on Tuesday, September 5th In accordance with the Central Labor Union. One year later the second Labor Day was celebrated in New York on September 5, 1883. The following year the first Monday of September was assigned the title of "The Workingmen's Holiday"
Labor Day as a holiday
The guidelines of Labor Day were set back in 1882 with the first proposal of the Holiday. A street parade to display to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations".. Followed by a festival for the recreation and enjoyment of the workers and their families. This eventually became the patter for Labor Day.
Later on in 1909 with a resolution by the National Labor Federation the Sunday before Labor Day was dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the Labor Day Movement.
